What coaching with PowerPlay means for Amara

Our coaches are passionate role models for our girls, with them every week for an entire school year. You can imagine the relationships and learning that goes on! Recently we asked one of our first-year coaches, Amara, to tell us what being a coach for PowerPlay means to her. Read on and let us know what you think!

“Being a coach for PowerPlay means being someone I needed when I was younger. I am the first daughter and second child born in my family, and it was hard getting mentored by my brother, especially when he wasn’t around too often. My parents were barely home because they were constantly working. I didn’t attend any after-school programs because there was no one to bring me home. With PowerPlay, I am here to mentor, advise, and show these young girls that they can do anything and everything they put their minds to. I’ve struggled all my life to embrace my body and stand by my beliefs, but through sports and physical activity, I have come to love myself, no matter what size I may be. By being a PowerPlay coach, it means that I am there for any girl who may have gone through insecure battles as I have in their childhood. It means that I am there to listen and give a shoulder to cry on. It means that I am a friend.”
