On a day filled with energy, teamwork, and empowerment, we partnered with Play Rugby USA to host an unforgettable Rugby Tournament on Randall’s Island—bringing together girls from across New York City.
This incredible event was made possible thanks to the support of 40 Nike volunteers, who brought their enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring a safe, fun, and inspiring experience for every participant.
What began just four years ago with 44 girls has grown into a citywide celebration of strength and sisterhood. This year, 165 girls of all skill levels came together to learn, play, and compete. While many returned for another year, it was the first time on a rugby field for others. Through tournament-style matches, they learned new strategies, built confidence, and developed leadership and communication skills both on and off the field.
Nike volunteers played an essential role—coaching, refereeing, cheering, and mentoring participants throughout the day. Their presence showed the girls that a powerful community of adults is invested in their growth and success.
This tournament was about more than sports—it was about representation, resilience, and creating inclusive spaces for girls to thrive. As part of PowerPlay NYC’s mission to advance the lives of girls and gender-expansive youth through sports, this event served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we invest in young people and give them platforms to lead.
