PowerPlay has a team of 7 superstar females from around the globe running in the 2015 TCS New York City marathon this November 1. Our team is a group of passionate, strong role models for our girls. Find out a little bit more about one of these powerful women below, Tammy Torres.

Hi Tammy! How did you find out about this opportunity to run the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon on behalf of PowerPlay? My friend, and fellow marathoner Danielle, was the one who first convinced me to do the marathon.  Growing up, I was always athletic and involved in sports, however I never dreamt of running a marathon until we found out about the charity PowerPlay. In speaking to Kate Bancks, Community Relations Manager for PowerPlay, we were instantly drawn to the charity. Anything that inspires young girls to be strong, educated and confident women, rocks.

There’s a whole lot of meaningful causes out there. What led you to choose to run for PowerPlay out of all the other charities? There are so many charities to choose from but for me I wanted to feel a personal connection.  PowerPlay has the ability to touch so many young women – and inspire them to build confidence through something that seems natural — sports.  I am excited to be part of such a great organization.

PowerPlay leverages the power of sport to make change in our girls’ lives. What roles do sports / athletics / fitness play in your life? Fitness became an important part of my life about 5 years ago.  It was through running and yoga that I found my quiet space admist the craziness of every day life…

Thanks Tammy for sharing a little of your personal story. Stay tuned to read about the other women’s reasons for running!

In the meantime you can help add meaning to our team’s miles — your gifts create opportunities for girls to play hard and gain confidence in PowerPlay’s after-school and summer programs. Donate today!
