Q: Why did you choose to participate as a mentor with PowerPlay?

A: I was recommended by a close friend and when I read about PowerPlay I got so excited! I have always enjoyed being a resource and being helpful to those around me and am driven by my passion for the youth. It is very important to me to be able to pour into young black people, especially women, so naturally I jumped at the opportunity.

Q: You’ve had your first meeting with the mentees. Can you reflect on that experience and share any memorable moments or insights gained?

A: In meeting with the mentees I wasn’t sure what to expect but what I truly adored was their unabashed expression of themselves, their personalities, and their dreams. In our first meeting, the mentees and mentors shared freely exchanging jokes, worries and advice. It was beautiful.

Q: What goals do you have for your mentoring relationship with your mentee(s)?

A: My goal for our mentoring relationship is to create an open and ongoing collaboration that is reciprocally rewarding. I want to be a resource for skill development, networking opportunities, navigating professional challenges, and building confidence.

Q: What message would you share with your mentee(s) as they embark on this mentorship journey, what would it be?

A: I would say to journal the experience. If your mentor says something that is meaningful to you or introduces you to a concept that is new to you, write it down. Reflect on the experience and be intentional with your interaction. This is a great learning opportunity.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your hopes and expectations for the mentorship program in the coming months?

A: I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone in person and fostering a community both with the mentor peers and the mentees. I hope my relationship with PowerPlay is longstanding and that we can see the current mentees become mentors in a few years.
