“When the Leadership Academy started, I was not expecting that everyone would get along so well. I thought that because we were all girls, one or two people would not get along or that cliques would be formed. I am glad to have had the other girls who were in the program with me. It made the experience better for me because I can be very shy when it comes to meeting new people, but for some reason I was comfortable with everyone and I got to be myself and open up more.
Before the program started, I thought we were mainly going to do sporty activities, but it wasn’t like that at all. Yes, we played sports but we did other things too. We did things that were beneficial to our future and activities that were really fun. For example, we went camping during the first week and although we did not really know one another we had to put our faith and trust in each other. We also got the chance to meet various people from different professions and learn about their jobs. They spoke to us about how we as young adults could get to where they are now. This was especially motivational for me.
By being involved with PowerPlay I am taking away so much. Tips like: 1) always network no matter where I am because opportunities are always around the corner waiting for you; 2) keep an open mind about things because you never know what you may or may not like; and finally, 3) do what you believe in because if you are passionate about something, it could take you a long way, have helped me now and I know will help me in my future.”
